While this story did not make many headlines, recently former WNBA player and coach, Hall of Famer, two time Olympian, and the face of TGR's relaunch Nancy Lieberman accepted a job to coach the new NDBL affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks.
This is a groundbreaking move by the Mavericks. There has never been a female coach in the NBA or in the NDBL. She will be the first female coach working with NBA players. Last year the NDBL sent 19 players to the NBA. So Lieberman is breaking a barrier for women everywhere.
Recently, Lieberman has served as a sports analyst for ESPN. But in an earlier interview she told TGR, "There is nothing like playing the game. Playing is the most wonderful thing in the world. After playing I would say coaching because you are still in the trenches." Lieberman's passion is to be on the court in some form and the Mavericks organization is allowing her to continue her passion.
The team will play its games in Frisco, Texas. The team does not have a name yet.
Hopefully, regardless of Lieberman's success she will be opening the doors for females get into coaching at the NBA level. We here at TGR wish her luck and look forward to seeing how it all works out.
The above picture was taken many years ago by TGR correspondent Lauren Abraham when she met Lieberman as a child =) Enjoy.
And Let Us Say...Amen.
