He is undefeated. He is about to fight for the light welter-weight title. And the one thing I know is that this fight will not take place on Shabbos. Dmitriy Salita, an Orthodox Jew, is going to be fighting Amir Khan for the belt on December 5th in Newcastle England. This story broke by Haaretz (and Manuel Gliksberg) mentions that Salita deserves to get the first crack at the newly crowned champion (Khan) because of his undefeated streak.
Salita has 30 wins and one draw including 16 knockouts, not bad for a Jewish boy. Nicknamed "The Star of David", was born in Ukraine but currently resides in Brooklyn NY. There is currently a film being made about Salita because of his unique talent and his religious beliefs. Salita will not fight on Shabbos or Holidays and keeps kosher under what must be a strick boxer's diet as well.
His family left the Ukrainan due to the voilence agaisnt Jews. Then Salita began boxing to fight of kids at school who saw a Ukrainan with bad English as an easy target. He has really been fighting off someone his whole life. Well he showed them. Salita loved watching Mike Tyson and has wanted to fight ever since he was a kid. In 2001 he turned pro and on December 5th he gets that chance to fight in front of a huge crowd and with the stakes never higher.
The fight itself is being billed by promoters as the title holding Muslim vs. the undefeated Jew. Obviously, this plays on the political and religious side of the fight. But ultimately it is a fight for the belt. One's first crack at the title and the other's first defense. So there will be nerves and there will be some intense punches.
Jews everywhere if you can watch this fight you should. Not only will it bring us much naches but it is going to be a great fight. Salita is a Jewish athlete we should all rally around both because of his commitment to his sport and his religion. Salita has been quoting saying, "Anyone who wants a good whuppin' from me is just going to have to wait until sundown." -www.haaretz.com
